Hi, my name is Johnny. I am 4 years old and I suffer from autism, a disease very few people understand. Here is my story, told by my mom:
Johnny is our little ray of sunshine and a joy to our lives. I remember the day when the pediatrician told us that he is a ‘perfect’ infant – wow, did we feel like the happiest parents on the planet. Little did we know what the future would hold for us. As our little boy grew we went about our lives working with our busy lives and a repetitive baby care routine. Nothing seemed odd during the first 6 months; Johnny took his first step around 8 months—he was an early walker. Our son moved into toddlerhood yet we never heard him speak one word!
Time went on and Johnny still wasn't saying any words and even more frightening, he didn’t understand much, either. When Johnny was 15 months old, we noticed excessive hand flapping and strange vocalizing, but our pediatrician reassured us that there was nothing wrong with him. My husband voiced his concerns that Johnny acted exactly like autistic kids he saw on a TV special about Autism, so it was not quite so shocking that we finally received a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (PDD-NOS). We knew that there was something ‘wrong’ with our little Johnny.
So here we were with a 22 month-old autistic child, not knowing what to do. Fortunately, our guardian angels were watching over us and we met some outstanding people who have helped us navigate this uneasy journey by guiding us in the right direction. As a result, Johnny was receiving 10 hours of ABA and some speech therapy at home, along with a center-based program where he also received ABA, speech and OT. Our 2 year-old was receiving some form of therapy either all or part of his day. Johnny had the same routine until he was 4 years-old, with very little improvement.
Sadly enough, the therapy did little to stop the hand flapping. He could not hold eye contact and no matter what we tried, his speech progressed painfully slow.. Parental panic set in again! I had read about biomedical interventions for autistic children and was as looking for practitioners who could help our little Johnny in his development. One day I picked up and began reading “Evidence of Harm” which convinced me to make an appointment with the group DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!) we had our doctor check to see if Johnny had any underlying medical issues that we were not aware of. Imagine our astonishment when a French lab report showed that Johnny had mercury poisoning along with other toxic heavy metals like lead, arsenic and aluminum, to name a few. So Johnny started a regimen of IV shots to improve his liver function and later we started IV cheation to remove heavy metals from his body. We also introduced a Gluten Free Casein Free Diet which improved his eye contact within a week. It was amazing! With time Johnny’s diet had to be restricted further because his body was not able to break down fatty acids, oxalates and phenols. Certain vitamins, minerals and amino acids had to be introduced to balance out some of the deficiencies. We recently traveled to Florida to see Dr Rossignol and we are hopeful that he will help us take a few more steps forward towards Johnny’s recovery.
